Training to be a Gladiator
You could become a gladiator by being a prisoner of war, strong and healthy slave, or a criminal. Being a gladiator was basically being condemned to die. A new recruit was called a novicius. He would be given a physical by a doctor then, if he was declared fit enough, begin his training. He was trained specifically to be a certain type of gladiator.
There were strict rules while eating, but they were well fed so they could fight better. Gladiators often became very close with others in their school. In a school, there was an arena, and the men slept in cells or barracks. It was two or three men per cell. There were rooms for equipment, a mess hall, kitchen, and baths. Gladiators were not allowed to leave. They were trained by a former gladiator who had won his freedom.
