Gladiators
Gladiators were ancient fighters in Italy. They were trained to fight beasts and other gladiators, often to the death. Thousands came to the arenas to watch. The shows were a favorite form of entertainment in Italian cities such as Pompeii and Rome.
Types Of Gladiators
One type of gladiator was a murmillo. These gladiators used swords and shields and wore helmets with crests on them. They fought with stabbing motions.
Another type of gladiator was retiarii. They wore shoulder and leg armor along with padded arm or leg guards. They carried a trident, dagger, and net. They fought by tangling their opponent in their net before stabbing them with the trident.
Thracians had round shields and curved daggers and swords. They wore arm and leg armor and padding. The curve of their weapons were used to get around shields. They swords and daggers were useless for stabbing, but if an opponent was hooked underneath their chin, it would cause a painful death.
Provocators wore arm and leg guards, helmets, and chest plates. They carried large wooden shields and daggers. Little is known about their fighting style other than the fights often lasted a very long time in the arena. They mostly fought other provocators.
Secutors wore the same armor as provocators and carried the same weapons. His technique was to chase his opponents around the arena.
